About

Fundación Casa Mi Rey

Organizational Background

Fundación Casa Mi Rey is a nonprofit cultural organization based in Vieques, Puerto Rico. The organization was established through the adaptive reuse of a private residence into a community-centered cultural space that supports arts education, cultural access, and local creative development.
The Foundation operates year-round and focuses on providing free public programs that respond to the needs of the local community.

Community & Territorial Context

Vieques is a geographically isolated island municipality with limited access to arts infrastructure and cultural resources. Local artists and residents face structural barriers to arts education, professional development, and sustained cultural programming.
Fundación Casa Mi Rey addresses these gaps by offering accessible, locally grounded programs designed in alignment with the social, environmental, and cultural conditions of Vieques.

Programmatic Philosophy

The Foundation is guided by the principle that the arts are a public service that contributes to education, civic engagement, and community well-being. Artistic practice is understood as a tool for learning, dialogue, and cultural continuity.
Programs are developed in collaboration with local artists, educators, and community partners, emphasizing ethical engagement, inclusivity, and shared knowledge.

Long-Term Commitment

Fundación Casa Mi Rey prioritizes long-term impact over short-term outcomes. The organization invests in consistent programming, local capacity building, and sustained relationships with artists and community members.
Through its combination of local initiatives and an artist residency program focused on education and public engagement, the Foundation strengthens the cultural ecosystem of Vieques while fostering responsible exchange between local and visiting artists.
